Williams (Roger) is born in London.
1603
(ca.) The son of James and Alice (Pemberton) Williams, Roger Williams graduates from Cambridge, becomes a celebrated minister, marries Mary Barnard in 1629, and emigrates to Boston in 1631.* Described by John Winthrop as a “Godly minister,” he refuses a position at the First Church in Boston, moves to Salem, then Plymouth, where his Separatist views are more acceptable, then back to Salem. But his differences with the religious and government authorities lead to his being banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635.* Williams founds the Providence Plantation in Rhode Island in 1636,* and goes on to serve as its governor (1654-1658). He dies in Providence in early 1684.
